February, 2012, Issue of Close-Up Posted
The February, 2912, issue of Close-Up is now available via our Newsletter page. Note that there are highlighted hot links to various e-mail addresses and url's, including those of our advertisers.
Also, continuing this month, there is a printable version of Close-Up. The format will enable printing, folding and stapling into a booklet. Feedback on the utility of this feature would be appreciated by e-mail to editor@victoriacameraclub.org.

"Wildlife Photographer of the Year" Close-Up Special Supplement Posted
The Royal BC Museum is currently hosting the only North American exhibition of the "Wildlife Photographer of the Year" competition run annually by London's Natural History Museum and the BBC Wildlife Magazine. Our Close-Up editor, Richard James, was able to preview the show and has brought us this most informative supplement, complete with a sampling of the exquisite images that fill the exhibition hall. CAPA Nature Club Competition - Fall 2011 - Results Posted
The results of our VCC entry to the CAPA Nature Club Competition for Fall, 2011, have now feen added to those for the Open competition on our Galleries > External Comps page. Follow the link to the new 2011-12 section.
VCC came out in a tie for 8th place among the clubs which entered. Kudos to the members whose images went forward and, especially, to Mike Wooding for his top ranked "Band-Tailed Pigeon" image!

"Shoot and Show" Field Trips and Club Galleries
On the second Tuesday and the following Monday of each month, January to May, 2011, our Field Trip schedule features a two part "Shoot and Show" outing. On the shoot, participants pursue a theme put forth by Jack Copland, our Field Trip Coordinator. On the show, participants have the opportunity to present their favourite images and to enter into a lively, friendly exchange
Club members are invited to check out the Calendar for the details on upcoming "Shoot and Show" events and to come out and share in the fun.
The most recent "Shoot and Show" followed a "Grab Bag" theme. Items were exchanged in a random draw. Those objects became the subjects in the shots of the day. Following the show, a gallery was established to which participants are invited to post their images. First postings are now up in our Club Galleries at http://www.pbase.com/vcc/field_trip_grab_bag.

CAPA Open Club Competition - Fall 2011 - Results Posted

In this, our first CAPA competition of the new club year, the VCC placed fourth out of 36 clubs and garnered an Honourable Award Certificate. Thanks to Ian Faris for facilitating our entry. Congratulations to all who contributed to this successful venture!

Michael Lambie - Nature's Best Category Winning Image
Former VCC member and Competitions Chair, Michael Lambie, is the 2011 winner of the Nature's Best Photography competition in the Endangered Species category. Regarding the image, Michael's comment, from the Nature's Best website follows: "I was able to watch several troops of monkeys at the Labuk Bay Sanctuary. This was an unusual scene; it seemed the two juveniles were being brought to heel after incurring the wrath of an adult male."

Scavenger Hunt 2011 Results Posted
The annual VCC Scavenger Hunt took place in downtown Victoria on October 2nd. The organizers introduced several innovations in the format. Twenty-three participants enjoied the camaraderie of the pursuit. Photographic results of the hunt are now available via a pointer on the Social Galleries page. Well done by all who took part!

President's Challenge - The Team Challenge Award
The newly established President's Challenge, with it's Team Challenge Award, has now been added to our website's About Us > About > Awards page. See all the details there. The first VCC team to take home the pink-slipper trophy included Wayne Swanson, Blair Ross, Gordon Simpson, Penny Codding and Doug Ambridge. Congratulations to each of them and a special thank-you to VCC President, Ed Moniz, for bringing this initiative to fruition.

VCC Wins Photographic Society of America Awards
The Victoria Camera Club recently placed third in this year's Photographic Society of America website and newsletter competitions. The awards were announced at the September 2011 PSA conference in Colorado Springs, CO.
The club website placed third among 41 entries from organizations with 75 or more members. The judging criteria included design and layout, navigation and ease of use, and content. Through the effort of Garry Schaefer, our club webmaster, and his assistants Lois Burton and Nick Watkins, the website is kept current and informative.
The club newsletter won third place out of 19 entries in the large club category. The May/June 2011 issue of Close-Up was submitted as our selected issue. The production team included Close-Up Editor Richard James, with the assistance of John Coenraads, Anne So, Ragnar Eeg, and Mike Hofmann. Recognition also goes to the authors of the articles in that issue and the makers of the competition and other images.
The club is a member of the PSA, a non-profit society based in the US, which was founded to promote the arts and sciences of photography.
