"Shoot and Show" Field Trips and Club Galleries

On the second Tuesday and the following Monday of each month, January to May, 2011, our Field Trip schedule features a two part "Shoot and Show" outing. On the shoot, participants pursue a theme put forth by Jack Copland, our Field Trip Coordinator. On the show, participants have the opportunity to present their favourite images and to enter into a lively, friendly exchange

Club members are invited to check out the Calendar for the details on upcoming "Shoot and Show" events and to come out and share in the fun.

The most recent "Shoot and Show" followed a "Grab Bag" theme. Items were exchanged in a random draw. Those objects became the subjects in the shots of the day. Following the show, a gallery was established to which participants are invited to post their images. First postings are now up in our Club Galleries at http://www.pbase.com/vcc/field_trip_grab_bag.

CAPA National Photographic Competitions for 2011-12

Each year the Victoria Camera Club enters nation-wide Photographic Competitions held by the Canadian Association for Photographic Arts (CAPA) for camera clubs across Canada. Historically the VCC has ranked very well in these friendly competitions against the other clubs. Results are posted on the CAPA website and in CAPA’s magazine Canadian Camera, and will of course, be announced at an upcoming VCC meeting as well.

This year 2011-12 there are two “rounds” of Open and Nature Competitions to be held in October 2011 and March 2012. There will also be an Altered Reality Competition to be held in January 2012 and a Theme Competition to be held in February 2012.

The first Open and Nature Competition closes on October 30th, 2011. The VCC Competition Committee invites the membership to participate and is now in the process of “gathering” images to represent the VCC as a club.

If you have a digital image you would like to have considered as part of the Club’s entry, in either the Open or the Nature Competition please submit your image(s) to Ian Faris at iandlfaris@shaw.ca by Thursday October 20. Refer to Ian's email on October 6 for further details.

VCC Wins Photographic Society of America Awards

The Victoria Camera Club recently placed third in this year's Photographic Society of America website and newsletter competitions. The awards were announced at the September 2011 PSA conference in Colorado Springs, CO.

The club website placed third among 41 entries from organizations with 75 or more members. The judging criteria included design and layout, navigation and ease of use, and content. Through the effort of Garry Schaefer, our club webmaster, and his assistants Lois Burton and Nick Watkins, the website is kept current and informative.

The club newsletter won third place out of 19 entries in the large club category. The May/June 2011 issue of Close-Up was submitted as our selected issue. The production team included Close-Up Editor Richard James, with the assistance of John Coenraads, Anne So, Ragnar Eeg, and Mike Hofmann. Recognition also goes to the authors of the articles in that issue and the makers of the competition and other images.

The club is a member of the PSA, a non-profit society based in the US, which was founded to promote the arts and sciences of photography.
